I received a phone call this morning from a young man who had called me a week ago desperate for support. I’d offered him a free virtual counselling session last week but he did not show up. A few days later I received a message from his sister saying that he was in crisis. I said I may be able to offer another session.
He phoned me this morning and I hesitated before picking up the call as I was about to head into a meeting. He said to me firstly thank you for picking up the phone. He then said to me what inspires you to do what you do, something must’ve happened to you because you look into people and you want to help.
I said to be honest I really don’t know, what inspires me to do the work I do, I suppose I just want to make a difference when I see people suffering and I want to make a difference.
He told me, “I’m going through a lot I am broken and it’s just too much for one person. I don’t know what to do.”
I had previously signposted into his GP. And he had informed me that he has now started taking his medication again but he just wants someone to talk to.
Sometimes all it takes is picking up the phone and listening. There are many people out there struggling and they feel broken and it feels likes it’s just too much for them as one person.
When was the last time you were there for someone without expecting anything in return. When you made yourself available and just listened.
What would you have said what inspires you? If someone asked you what inspires you to do what you do what would you say?
